Support & Services for the Midlands LGBTQ+ Community

It can be isolating to be LGBTQ+ in South Carolina, but here at the Harriet Hancock Center we provide you with a safe and welcoming space for South Carolina’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies. We strive to create a space for to be yourself, receive social support from those who understand your experiences, and a way to keep up with LGBTQ+ culture in the Midlands. As a community center, our main offerings are support & social groups, educational material, and a directory of community resources.


We provide community support and resources with a variety of services. 

Resource Guide

Community resources throughout South Carolina for the LGBTQ+ community. Includes crisis assistance, medical services, counseling services, community organizations, LGBT friendly businesses, affirming religious congregations, etc. 

Transgender Resource Guide

Community resources throughout South Carolina specifically for the transgender community. Includes legal services, medical providers, counseling services, etc. 
Change Your Name, Change Your Life - a name change and gender marker clinic in partnership with the Transgender Awareness Alliance.

Programs & Services

We have a diverse range of programs & services, including support & social groups, educational programs, a free lending library, book club and community events.

About the Harriet Hancock Center

For over 30 years, the Harriet Hancock Center has been providing support & services for the LGBTQ+ community in the Midlands area. To find out more about the history of our center, our mission, our leadership and the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Columbia, check out our about page.

Harriet Hancock LGBT Center

Named after longtime activist and co-founder of the South Carolina Pride Movement, the Center provides a safe and welcoming space for South Carolina’s LGBT community and its allies.

Our facility offers a variety of resources including a free lending library, meeting spaces for LGBT-supportive groups, and a directory of LGBT-friendly businesses, organizations, and counselors while also serving as the headquarters for the South Carolina Pride Movement.

The resources provided at the Harriet Hancock LGBT Center are free and available to everyone during operating hours. These times may vary depending on the availability of center staff and volunteers.
