Dear friends and allies,
Youth OUTLOUD, the LGBT youth program at the Harriet Hancock LGBT Center, is pleased to announce that the second annual South Carolina Queer Youth Prom will be held on April 8, 2017, in Columbia, SC at EdVenture Children’s Museum. Queer Prom is an opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and allied students to have an important high school milestone in a safe and affirming environment. Many queer and trans students do not have an opportunity to meet other LGBT youth. Last year, our event boasted 150+ LGBT youth and allies in attendance at SC Queer Youth Prom 2016. For 2017, we hope to increase those numbers and the impact of this safe and affirming environment.
Often, in school settings, proms and other “couple” events can be particularly isolating for LGBT youth. Discrimination and marginalization come in many forms at these types of events whether its adherence to a strict gendered dress code, extra fees to bring a date of the same-sex/gender, or simply not allowed to attend. Additionally, transgender youth are frequently not permitted to dress in a gender-affirming manner. For these reasons and many more, the Harriet Hancock LGBT Center’s Youth OUTLOUD program is holding the second annual Queer Youth Prom in South Carolina.
SC Queer Youth Prom is an opportunity for young LGBT South Carolinians to experience an evening without barriers such as gender discrimination, homophobia, dating violence, bullying, etc. In order to provide a quality, accessible, and inclusive environment at low cost to attendees we are asking that you/your organization consider serving as a sponsor for the 2017 SC Queer Youth Prom. We have numerous sponsorship packages available, with details on the following page. Through sponsorship your organization will not only assist in the success of this endeavor but will also be recognized by the upwards of one hundred and fifty attendees from across the state we hope to draw.
We hope you will consider this unique opportunity to be a part of the second annual SC Queer Youth Prom on April 8, 2017 and to make this event accessible and of comparable quality to typical high school proms. We are confident this will be a meaningful experience for all of our attendees and will inspire ongoing commitments to change in our state. Thank you for your time and consideration, and please do not hesitate to contact our Youth OUTLOUD Coordinator, Kate Hoffman (YOL@HarrietHancockCenter.org, 865.973.0685), with any questions or concerns.
